Dark Mode or Light Mode: Which converts better?

When do you choose a dark theme and what is the psychological impact on your brand experience?

Dark Mode or Light Mode: Which converts better?

The rise of Dark Mode

Developers have always loved it, but dark mode is now mainstream in consumer and business software. The question is: should your marketing website be dark too?

What does dark communicate?

Dark themes work excellently for brands that want to position themselves as:

  • Exclusive and high-end (luxury brands, automotive)
  • Hyper-technical (SaaS, development agencies)
  • Evening/Night oriented (Hospitality, Events)

Readability and Contrast

The biggest risk of a dark theme is readability. Pure white (#FFFFFF) on pure black (#000000) causes halation (a blur around the letters) in people with astigmatism. Therefore, always use off-white (such as #EFEFEF) on dark gray (#0A0C10) for a calmer reading experience.

When Light Mode is better

For medical services, law firms, and coaches, a light variant is often better. It subconsciously associates with transparency, honesty, and clarity.
